Peace Class is a free online class every Wednesday evening from October until summer. I started attending in the Fall of 2023 and as of October 23rd, 2024, Peace Class is starting its 5th year.
Peace Class is hosted by the Philosophical Research Society (PRS) and is one of the wellness classes led by poet, writer, and activist, Mandy Kahn. It’s more than a class, students check in from all over the world, and some have been attending since it first started in 2020 which makes it feel more like a club than a class. The Zoom meeting is recorded with the student’s camera and audio off. Throughout the class, everyone is welcome to participate in the chat box that goes directly to Mandy who reads responses out loud unless noted otherwise.
Each session begins by honoring Peace Pilgrim, a humble woman of God who walked across the United States for 28 years, dedicated to spreading a message of peace.
This is followed by a guided meditation focused on the spirit of peace. With each inhale, think to yourself “I welcome in the spirit of peace”
Mandy guides us to expand our peaceful energy in a series. At first, it’s 10 feet around us in all directions, then a city block, and then the whole city, traveling far and wide, crossing state lines, continents, and oceans. I see it crossing over islands, open plains, and deserts. Visualize this peaceful energy over the opposite side of the earth and come rushing back to you.
After the meditation, Mandy presents a peace talk, drawing on quotes from influential thinkers. In our first class, she talked about architect, inventor, and futurist, Buckminster Fuller, and how he understood the impact of what one person could do on this earth. He used the metaphor of a ship’s rudder and how its angle can direct the entire trajectory.
In the last part, we do a guided meditation.
Closing your eyes, see a door, and ask your higher self to give you a glimpse of what a world full of peace could look like. When I opened this door, I saw a big gust of wind like the energy of peace was sweeping out old energy. I then saw a field of flowers with an X-ray vision of how each flower grew. It looked like steampunk mechanics, machines, and gears, representing that the beauty, magic, and wonder of nature are all part of a larger system that can transform into a world of peace.
Participants are then prompted to ask their higher selves for one action they can take to move closer to their vision of peace. My higher self reassured me that achieving a world of peace is easy and encouraged me to believe that it is easy.
Mandy shared her vision of peace from this meditation. Part of the world she saw was people putting out buckets of milk for stray cats. These cats weren’t raggedy alley cats, they were the healthiest bookstore cats, being well taken care of.
Attending Peace Class feels transformative. The meditations expand my perspective and connect me to a larger sense of peace and love. It also evokes feelings reminiscent of heightened states often associated with psychedelic journeys, yet I experienced all of this simply through meditation. It came from this place of peace and love which makes it feel very burning man-esk, MDMA, shroomy kind of feeling where I feel love and compassion for others just beaming out of me. What’s crazy is that I didn’t do any drugs, I just sat in on a Zoom meeting and showed myself where a meditation of peace could take me.
Stop by Peace Class and see where it takes you.
