Community Beyond the Float at Float On
Float On, in Portland, OR has a selection of cabins, pods, and open pools. But beyond the float experience, they’ve expanded their float brand to include book publishing, chromotherapy, and introductory programs.
The shop blends into an art gallery of blue and yellow walls, webbed installations on the ceiling, an underwater mural, and a new art show each month featuring local artists.
I met a float facilitator, Kiwi, who happens to be the next featured artist this summer. You can check out her multi-medium style at @honestlybigbird.
Float On’s retail includes chromotherapy glasses to match their bold, flying circus-like decor. Here's a brief description of how each color can shift your perspective and internally affect your health. Some shades cast a singular color amongst the environment while others make certain colors pop.
Kiwi shared that some clients even bring chromotherapy glasses into the float. Mixed with the colored lighting in each pod, I can see how it could shift my mood.
The owners came up with a great idea to introduce new types of clientele to the floating community. They currently host programs for Writers, those in Maternity, and Volunteers in foundations throughout Portland. Their previous program can be rediscovered in books from their publishing house, Coincidence Control.
I found a collection of sketchbooks on the bottom shelf and Kiwi shared that they used to have a coffee table for floaters to doodle and share their thoughts. We flipped through them and found beautiful reminders of what a float can bring.
I encourage you to stop by Float On and try a float, hang out and talk about it, check out the art gallery, and enhance your world with fresh lenses.
