My Nailcare

I’ve always loved taking care of my nails and have learned that a simple routine keeps them the healthiest. I’m sensitive to chemicals, so I avoid products that might irritate my skin or compromise my nail health. I focus on using clean, natural alternatives that I can easily find at Target, Ulta, or drugstores.

Since I’m mindful of the chemicals in beauty products, I researched natural and green alternatives for base coats. I discovered that many traditional nail products contain harmful ingredients like formaldehyde, toluene, and DBP (dibutyl phthalate). Luckily, the best natural base coats are free of these chemicals and often include plant-based ingredients that help nourish and strengthen your nails.

I’ve been using ella + mila all about the base for my base coat since 2020 and this has been my secret ingredient. This brand is 7-free, meaning it’s free of the seven most common toxic chemicals found in many nail products. My nails stay healthy, strong, and free of chips, cracks, and discoloration.

Healthy cuticles are essential for healthy nails, and for this, I alternate between different oils depending on what I have on hand like coconut oil, jojoba oil, and grapeseed oil. All of these oils are natural, hydrating, and rich in vitamins.

I recently picked up a bottle of NailTek cuticle oil because it contains a combination of safflower seed oil and sweet almond oil. These are highly rich in vitamins and essential fatty acids that deeply nourish, hydrate, and promote moisture retention. One drop per nail keeps the skin soft and healthy, and I often make it part of my nightly routine.

Since the pandemic, I’ve been into neutral shades that complement my skin tone. I find that these colors make my fingers look elongated without being too distracting. Eternal’s gold has become a staple in my collection, it’s a soft nude with a translucent shimmer that I can layer.

Since my nails grow pretty quickly, I don’t usually feel the need to use a topcoat. The ella + mila base coat and the polish itself provide a durable finish that lasts a while without chipping. I make a habit of touching up my nails every week or so to keep them happy.

Maintaining beautiful nails is about consistent care, making sure my cuticles are moisturized and my nails are clean and polished. Healthy nails don’t need too much fuss, but regular attention can make all the difference in keeping them strong and healthy.

I also make sure to eat well and stay hydrated, as good nutrition and proper blood circulation show up in the strength and appearance of our nails.

I made a paint-along vlog for a fun, calming ritual where I paint my nails and read a story about inner beauty, self-care, and the little moments that bring peace to our souls. Here I chat with a time-traveling cat who speaks poetically about her views on beauty.

Painting my nails with a little extra time to care for them is a simple way to nurture myself. You can create a simple, green nail routine that helps maintain strong, beautiful nails free of harmful chemicals. Every time I see my nails freshly done, I feel just a little more put together, and it’s always a good reminder that small moments of beauty and care can have a big impact on how we feel.
