SCI-Arc Spring Show

As I share about the Spring Show, a part of me wants to revisit formal critique methods that I learned from my undergraduate studies in Interior Architecture at Cornish College of the Arts. The program was new and relied on perspectives from the architecture industry but seemed to forget that they were in a school with programs in dance, music, art, and theater which isolated its potential for cross-disciplinary expression. During our presentations and critiques, I heard many prescribed observations from current industry standards but left out praise for creative risks and honest emotional expression.

So even though a piece at the SCI-Arc Spring Show nearly brought me to tears, I sense the gap that our culture has in this area of emotional intelligence and communication. All I can say is that its fab therapy moved me for personal reasons, but isn’t that one of the many aspects of experiencing art?

I refer to SCI-Arc and most of its events as an art experience with rigorously thorough research that’s clearly the standard.

The 2023 Spring Show hosts a respite for creative intellectuals who appreciate cultures, ponder humanity and enjoy enriching the mind. As I walked through the gallery spaces, I noticed the complex process of form finding, materiality, and cultural vernacular it took to reach this stage.

igniting discussions, and teasing out perspectives, in a detailed static study

a living piece, an emotional prediction, a multidimensional snapshot

painting a possible future in materiality, lighting design, and community spaces

moments of peace

a highlighter, in a robotic arm, guided by William Morris

twisting reality, social commentary, a stage for our memories

authentic, representation, storytelling, beauty

construction concepts on a community scale, causing economic development, and expediting our growth rate

maquettes, adaptability, and to code

color coding egress, paths, and surfaces to instantly understand its integration into the environment

I appreciate the bright posters for mental health reminders with weekly yoga classes, tips for work/life/school balance, and stress prevention techniques. As a former environment design student, I understand the pressure and how it affects the mind and body. Part of Spa Research is a cautionary tale and as I am healing, I’m seeing wonderful progress like this in health studies and work ethics.

At SCI-Arc, their priorities for self-care influence the school’s atmosphere and are reflected in the sprawl of creative spaces that represent an optimistic direction.
